Degree Show 1989, Edinburgh College of Art |
I was very fortunate to be in a year with extremely talented and highly motivated peers at Edinburgh College of Art. I was constantly frustrated by how much better so many of my fellows were and I struggled right up until Xmas 1989. In January 1989, with four months to my degree show, the then Head of Painting, Professor David Michie, asked me (along with several others) to make some illustrations for a local hospital charity cookbook. These has to be black and white and so I duly made two small lino cut prints about a chap floundering in the kitchen. These illustrations unlocked in me a compositional device, which aided my quirky figurative sensibility and lead to a series of focused drawings and paintings which I am still extremely proud of. I had moved away from the overtly derivative 'glasgow style' and the response was very positive both academically and with the public. The works actually all sold! |
