Chichester, West Sussex 1999 - 2003

I needed to get away from Gray's School of Art, so I began applying for new jobs. The only job I was offered an interview for was as Head of Fine Art at University College Chichester in West Sussex, England. I duly got the job, and with some hesitation I took it. I knew that this was going to be even more managerial than at Grays - but at least it would be a new challenge. The course itself was very under developed when I took over, and the quality of the student work was poor overall. In the fours years I was there, I oversaw the building of new fine art premises, underwent a government quality assurancy review, rewrote of the entire curriculum and the development of a new course. But, it nearly was the end of as my health suffered enormously. I made very little new work of note of which was a continuous embarrassment to me. Only during the summer in Cyprus in 2002 did I make a body of new work.

Chichester itself is a wealthy and deeply conservative small cathedral city set between the beautiful South Downs and the english seaside coast - only spoilt by narrowness of vision within the community, and too many wealthy people with no sense of humour. Ultimately, it was not the place for me and I quit the Job and Chichester in December 2003.
