Edinburgh 2008
So 2008 started with a major project to paitn a portrait of Catie within the framework of the space in Wellington place. This turned out be a painting done in situe over several weekends and trying to follow on from the observational style with oils I had been rediscovering in 2007. In the end it was overworked perhaps. Then my Edinburgh work took a break in March while returned to Cyprus for one last trip. When I returned, I made a few lacklustre pictures back in the flat but before the onslaught of eca Summer School kicked in and could say cheerie bye to painting for a while. As with last year, it was not until September, when I have some leave, that I got into my work again. I had a weeks trip to the Isle of Skye, where I made some small pictures. But when I returned to Edinburgh, I was eager to continue to explore the interior and exterior world of the places I was living. I really got the hunger for direct observational oil paintings usally done in a 'oner'. Catie had been doing this all summer and was very inspiring to see her develop in this way. So when the bright autumn weather came along, I found myself trailing my easel, fishing bag stool, brushes and palette and thoroughly enjoying this very simple task of recording what I see. More and more I am allowing the pictures to exist without figures or any particular story in mind. But we shall have to see where this leads.
